Stardust can be gathered from a shooting star and can be exchanged for various rewards, including a dragon pickaxe and the golden mining set, by talking to the Star sprite when the fallen star is completely mined. The Star sprite will stay around for 5 minutes after the last piece of stardust has been mined.
