The Steel hatchet requires an Attack level of 5 to be equiped. It can be purchased for 253 coins in Bob's Axes shop located in Lumbridge and Port Sarim. It can also be made by using the Smithing skill. This requires a Smithing level of 31 and 1 Steel bar and will grant 260 smithing XP. The Steel hatchet is usually only used for the Woodcutting skill; a woodcutting level of 6 is required to be able to cut logs with it.

Hatchets can be used from their inventory to cut wood with, if the player does not have the required Attack level to equip it.
