Introductions & Farewells / Why I no longer play

Some of you are probably curious about why I left given that I've played emps the way I did for years, I'm going to clarify in this thread. A lot of you probably know already, but that's not going to keep me from making a final statement. Tl;dr at the end for people that suck at reading.

If you do not know who I am because you joined the game after I quit, I spent a bit over two years in the staff team and wrote wiki pages, guides, suggestions and feedback.

Direction
Emps has had a couple of big problems since it came back, and while the problem of endgame content got solved with the addition of new bosses there are plenty of problems left. The economy is in shambles due to the low amount of new players, the lack of attempts to help it with updates and due to the effects of stakers on the market. The amount of trading that goes on would almost force people into ironman mode if it weren't for the grand exchange. The sheer amount of money and items that gets rwted by stakers not only takes away huge amounts of donations but also means those players don't participate in the market regularly. Ironman mode doesn't have this issue, but they don't exactly participate in group content the same way regular players do.

New boss drops are done in a way that creates more powercreep, powercreep harms pvp, pvp shapes a lot of demand for gear and supplies and this is why nothing is worth jack shit anymore. The lack of balance in exp rates is making rs3 an actually bearable alternative for emps. It's becoming more and more of an impossible task to fix these issues in a realistic manner with the current conditions. If there is no major change in game direction it will be what kills emps.

Community
Let's analyze two important aspects of the community. The forums and the staff team.

The forums continue to drop in post and topic activity, not only that but the counting to 10k thread makes up for a significant fraction of the posts nowadays. To top that off, the important sections of the forum (guides, suggestions & feedback) are dying rapidly in activity. This makes it a lot more difficult for a developer to connect with his playerbase. I don't know why nobody is doing anything about it. There seems to be very little motivation from players to improve the state of the game.

The staff team, oh boy where do I start. The way the staff team is set up in terms of recruiting and policy is what has caused the team to be in it's current state. In the past recruiting anyone that stood out in terms of quality worked because we had the playerbase for it, however this is no longer the case. We've had seemingly more random promotions and a lot of staff members that were in the team shorter than I was game admin. And rather than putting effort into creating a new system the standards for new staff members continue to reach new lows. And here I thought promoting Mario all the way to admin just to keep him from breaking the rules was a bit of a weird way to do things. The lack of transparency is also something that makes things very difficult for the staff team. There's a huge barrier of entry to it due to the sheer lack of information on what being a staff member actually entails.

Rules continue to be enforced very little if at all, and you can see it's effects on the community. The topics for rules aren't kept up to date. The issue of the report abuse button not doing anything is still unresolved. Real world trading is more rampant than ever, people really seem to want to liquidate their banks, I wonder why? A botting issue was "solved" by just cutting everyone's supply, just making the bot a bit less profitable. I wonder how easy it would be to become the richest player in the game by creating a few scripts, it's not like staff members can do anything if you just get your bot to reply to them.

The current way the staff team is set up continues to make conditions worse for them. If nothing is done about that there won't be a functional staff team left. You can host events all you want but it's not going to make up for the absense of proper rule enforcement. I won't take shots at any staff members, Martin is ultimately responsible for the team and should be held accountable. Not that I expect that to happen, criticism is met with censorship, demotion or punishment. The only time Thomy interfered was when he was told Martin was checking through staff members personal skype accounts using teamviewer and that this was mandatory else they'd be demoted, this was in 2015 for those of you that joined the staff team more recently.

Tl;dr:
It's not a single decision or event that made me quit, rather it's certain things that kept happening. The direction that updates are headed in makes the economy suffer, the forums are rapidly dying and the staff team is set up in a way that makes it hard for them to positively affect the community.

Just like Jp I've found a better alternative to emps in RS3. I don't like that emps is like this, but I'm not adamant about changing that anymore. I've come to terms with it, and in time so will everyone else.

Update Notes / Updates August 8th 2017 - Game Balancing & Fixes

Hey everyone,

I've been away for quite a bit. The reasons for my break is that I'm just being busy with other things. Also the decline in emps' popularity has been quite demotivating and frustrating for me. So I've decided to take a break and focus on my master thesis as well as on my job. Don't worry though, emps is still a hobby that I enjoy working on! I'll be working more on features that bring new players and keep old players rather than programming new content. The updates I currently have in mind are the following:
  • Referrals - Pretty much done for months already, but I still haven't had an idea on how to fix cheating here. We probably need to verify referrals manually in order to keep it fair.
  • Nex - I originally planned to release this new boss directly after Construction but it got delayed many times. It's still on the update stack though.
  • Achievements - Recently started working on it, but I cannot say when it will be done. This heavily depends on how many achievements there will be.
  • Graphical Improvements - I've read into water effects and thought that ambient occlusion might also improve the game. Though I haven't had too much success yet in implementing those.

Weaknesses

It has been brought up recently that equipping high level armour completely destroys the combat triangle. You get defensive bonuses for every attack style and that results in being overall resistant to everything. This becomes especially annoying in PvP situations where your opponent's high level armour just cannot be countered in any way.
This is unhealthy gameplay imo and I am presenting following solution: defensive bonus reduction. Armours can be is split into 3 classes: Melee, Range and Magic. The combat triangle's concept is the following: Melee beats Range, Range beats Magic and Magic beats Melee. Thus Melee armour is weak against Magic, neutral against itself and strong against Range. In order to give weakness and neutrality a more meaningful impact, I've reduced weak and neutral defensive bonuses:
  • Weakness: 35% of its original bonus
  • Neutral: 70% of its original bonus
Strong bonuses have been untouched (Range bonus of Melee armour). This means that there has been no impact on damage soaking and also accuracy and strength bonuses remain untouched. This change's purpose is to give your character clearer weaknesses but still keep armours useful.


Changes and Fixes:
  • Clan chat messages are now correctly shown again. Some commands were just ignored. (/create, /delete, etc.)
  • Experience broadcasts were bugged. They're fixed and will now show correctly.
  • The fade-in effect of new objects when the map is loading has been improved. Some flickering effects have been fixed.
  • Superheat spell has been fixed. It will no longer eat runes and grant experience when you don't meed the requirements to smelt ores.
  • Framescale now goes up to 2.0. This will work fine with 4k monitors. With this patch, the viewport with framescales has also been fixed.
  • A bug in duel arena was fixed that healed players randomly while they were dying resulting in the other party winning the duel. I know this bug has been frustrating for many months, but the cause remained unknown until now!
  • A bug in PvP fights has been fixed that showed a wrong health bar. The bug occurred when you ate and healed at exactly the same time. The heal is registered as a negative health addition. This addition (- -1 = +1) resulted in the hit being added instead of being subtracted and then showed a wrong health bar.
  • The proc chance of Karils and Veracs has been increased from 25% to 40%.
  • Damage soaking bonus of Torags increased from 8 to 10.
  • Crystal shield's defensive bonuses have been nerfed. It now gives +75 in every combat style.
  • Dharok's effect has been buffed. The maximum hit has been buffed from 84 to 96 (1 HP, pot, prayer, max strength bonus). The formula has also slighty been edited to let the effect kick in earlier. Your Equipment screen now also shows the max hit with Dharoks on 1 HP.
  • Accuracy bonuses of melee barrow weapons nerfed from 131/151 to 121. Note: Dharok's axe accuracy bonus nerf of 30 sounds like a lot but its max hit has been buffed by 10 to cope with that!

I'll be on holidays (no work + no uni) in the coming 3-4 weeks and plan on releasing at least one of the bigger updates mentioned above. :)

Update Notes / Updates July 4th - Ironman Mode

Hello everybody,

I've got quite a few things ready, so please take your time and read through them. Some updates might be of great interest for you!

Ironman mode
Many people have continuously suggested the famous ironman mode. You're now able to make yourself an ironman account on tutorial island. The quest guide (last npc to visit) will offer you the option to become an ironman account. With this update, I've also reworked parts of the Hiscores. The page's layout was updated and an option was added to view ironman accounts only. Ironman accounts cannot get any items from player interactions, they have to get everything themselves (with the exception of membership tickets).
Moreover, ironman accounts have a special icon in front of their name to show off their efforts.


Protection Prayers
The way protection prayers used to work was confusing and I also don't wish to explain it. This update overhauls protection prayers. When fighting an enemy with a protection prayer, your maximum hit is reduced:
  • You get 40% less damage from players with an activated protection prayer.
  • You get 60% less damage from monsters with an activated protection prayer.
With this update we have a fair and easy to understand protection prayer system, the maximum damage is simply reduced. Monsters that cannot hit more than 25 will ALWAYS hit 0 with an activated protection prayer. This means that protection prayers give you full protection from weak monsters.

In-game fixes / tweaks:
  • The map loader has been rewritten. Presenting you a much smoother map transition when walking into newer areas. When teleporting somewhere, the game will pause until the region is loaded. Resulting in an overall smoother gameplay.
  • The minimap is now rendered faster and won't lag anymore when moving around. It's now making use of multiple cores on your system to share the workload.
  • Two additional obsidian dragons have been added to their caves.
  • The way how dragonfire protection works has been changed. Dragonfire will now hit you more often and cannot be fully protected anymore. Dragonfire damage can always hit a maximum of 3 now, no matter how much protection you use.
  • Vesta's spear special now works correctly again.
  • You will now also get double tickets when using double XP scrolls during the Brimhaven agility arena minigame.

In other news
I'll now start working on the next huge update, which is going to be a new dungeon with a new boss. I'll most likely combine this with a quest series that continuously gives you more access to the area. I'm not 100% sure on the outcome though, just letting you guys know what I've got in mind. :D

Basically me commenting on a fight I had with one of Lithuania's finest pkers.

Also the quality of the video is quite bad because I couldn't use sony vegas, kept messing up the video after I rendered it. As a result I used windows movie maker and therefore I couldn't add background music + the audio is a tiny bit out of sync (kept crashing when I tried to fix things).

Introductions & Farewells / I passed the exams!

So for the last 2 month I was very inactive cuz i had to prepare for exams. ~1month ago I absolutely quitted so I could entirely prepare for exams. Compared with the previous year exam results, back in a day my results were 60-70%, this year exam results are pretty better. My results are 85-90%.

Anyways now I will have a lot of free time so You might see me online a bit often.
