If during mining you drop an item, you cannot mine the ore anymore. It will mine for eternity and no ores are obtained. If you switch between rocks and go back to the original one it is fine.

It's a feature, also the animation only goes through once and then stops for me, not sure if you were exaggerating about it going on for an eternity or not. If you were exaggerating then this isn't a bug.

Original board was Help me! And yeah, it's not a bug after all.  It's an intended feature.
I did not remember that change at all but now that you mentioned I actually do remember it and why it was changed in the first place.
