LOOOL this looks just exact pic that i got in my school book ....
if u look even closely enought u can see its taken from a book....
theres red smudges and it effects when u make picture of something that has black background and ton of colors in a picture
also the red smudges come when theres too much Inc used
also if u look closely enought theres wierd lining there

That dotted line is very irregular.. looks more like he caught a fallen star on it too that was very fast > you capture it multiple times based on how the photo is built up/shutter time (it's very fast).
And the nebula looks similar on every picture, it barely changes in such short time as the time humans have cameras ;)

OT: I was actually looking at Orion at about the same time you took that picture o.O I was cycling home and the skies were really clear so i could see a lot of constellations. Used to be into things like that years ago but not that much anymore :/
Cassiopeia is my favourite, I always stretch my neck to see it (in our part of the world its always directly above you)
Orion too mainstream pls

Added another shot (of Andromeda) to first post, has been cloudy a lot of nights recently though.

These are pretty cool thanks for the share Jonneh. I was wondering do you happen to have or know the coords of these?
Example,

Crab nebula or gtfo

added an improved shot of m42 to op, more and longer exposures this time = less noise

Had some okay conditions tonight, managed to get some minutes of usable exposure on M101 (pinwheel galaxy), aiming to get ~12 hours or so total before this shot is ready.

how much does a telescope like this set you back?

The one I use is fairly low end reflector and cost £140 (~$210), but if you do photography and not just visual observation you'll also need a T or T2 adapter (£20 or so) and a reasonably good camera. Refractor telescopes are generally get better quality than reflector telescopes but also more expensive for the same aperture.

You wash your clothes outside and dry them in the washing machine in UK! That's common knowledge omg :kappa:

Yeah is clothes line, gets used rarely. Mostly we just dry all our crap inside on the banister.

so tonight was pretty much the first cloudness night since i got my new mount
i actually ended up DIYing an autoguider using a crappy microsoft webcam and some pro codeing and soldering skills
unfortunately i done fucked up and had my telescope pointing at the wrong place for over an hour
i did wonder why m31 looked so dim on 15 minute exposures, turns out it was actually ngc185 the whole time
(http://i.imgur.com/RDrjnXV.jpg)
tomorrow is also cloudless so hopefully i'll be able to fix my autoguider (it won't do ra-) and actually point it at a decent target
on the upside i was actually able to pick up the core of ngc185 with the webcam in my autoguider (much sensitivity, wow! :doge:)
-
Lemme fix that for u

spent more time in post processing on this than actually acquiring data >:(
this one was actually taken with a 135mm camera lens (although with tiny sensor so effectively like 400mm or so focal length)

This is something I'm actually really interested in. I'm guessing the cameras are pretty expensive though...

Why were the last 4 pictures black and white?
They're all taken with a monochrome camera, and through a filter which only lets through one specific colour of light (which is actually in the near infrared).

Looking really cool. What resolution are your photos? I could try to put them as a skybox into emps. :D

most are around 3000x2000, I can go for higher resolutions by stitching multiple shots together like a panoramic though :)

Just to give some sort of scale to the precision required for these images, this is part of the guiding graph from tonights session. The blue line is error on the RA axis, the red is the DEC axis. RA has more error since this is the one that actually rotates to counter the rotation of the earth. You can see from the scale on the left that the maximum error is about 1 arcsecond. this is roughly 0.000278° which is just under 1 millionth of a full rotation. Since no amount of engineering is going to make gears precise enough for this without being huge and very expensive, I use a technique called guiding which uses a second small camera/telescope to watch stars and continously correct for error, which is what the screenshot is of.

its a HQ025EMSBK, made by RS but designed by Gainta
normally doesn't come with the dome, I cut a hole out for that and the sealed rj45 jack, then epoxied the dome into place
also epoxied some standoffs for mounting the pi and poe voltage regulator
