Restarting the client entirely solved it. Not sure what caused this bug or how to reproduce it.

Thanks. It's possible that you were using an outdated version of the client because I've applied an update yesterday that fixes exactly that private messaging issue. Let me know if it happens again and I'll do further investigations.
